#TuesdayThinks: The power of tiny habits.

By Laura Giffard

Every Tuesday we think some thinks and round up some top tips.

“If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail” is a mantra that has accompanied me throughout my professional life. If I really want something, I make damn sure I know where I want to get to and how I’m going to get there. Which is just dandy, when it’s something I want to do. But what about all those things I have to do (financial reconciliation anyone?) that I don’t necessarily want to do. Well, thankfully, I have a very patient team who cajoles me over the finish line.

But I always knew, in the back of my mind, something needed to change. Enter the altMBA: to challenge me from fresh angles! Hidden away in a little footnote, I spotted the game-changing words: micro-habits. Intrigued, I looked into it further and discovered that to get something done I don’t necessarily have to give it my all. Sometimes a few tiny nudges are sufficient to get me to where I want to be.

The learning? Rather than blocking out 4 hours a week for finance, why couldn’t I just do 1 hour a day? Suddenly, it’s a much less painful process. And, this way, the bureaucratic stuff always stays front of mind, which helps because it really does matter (even if I’d rather be working on a piece of exciting client work).

Ready to start dominating your most tedious tasks? Here are my top tips:

1. Get real with yourself: identify those things that are slipping because you simply don’t want to do it.

2. Follow the 20/80 rule: According to the Pareto Principle, 80% of outputs come from 20% of inputs, so make sure you follow those small tasks that will drive the maximum results and prioritise them!

3. Launch your tiny habits: get going with these priorities and make them happen daily – you’ll be surprised how much you’ll achieve. Don’t forget to re-evaluate regularly because if you’re not seeing exponential results you’ve likely not hit your biggest priorities!

Tiny habits are great for easing your daily workflow, but if you need a hand with bigger picture stuff such as branding, strategy, marketing, web builds and more, then get in touch with our team of specialists and see how we can supercharge your business!
